Navigating Evidence-Based Practices in Children's Mental Health


The sheer number of new methods and practices in children’s mental health can be overwhelming. You don’t need to be an expert, but it helps to know some of the key features. This presentation, delivered by Project Harmony Clinical Director Barbara Jessing, offers a survey of evidence-based practices in children’s mental health and is designed for the professional who refers children to services. You will learn the questions that a well-informed advocate needs to ask to find the right mental health services and practitioner for a child. Among the evidence-based practices reviewed are CPP (Child Parent Psychotherapy), TFCBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), AFCBT (Alternatives for Families CBT); EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy); MI (Motivational Interviewing); CFTSI (Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention); PCIT and TCIT (Parent-Child/Teacher-Child Interaction Therapy or Training); and CBITS (Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools).

Participants will learn:

  • What current evidence-based practices (EBP) are available in mental health services for children and families
  • To understand the significance of evidence-based practices and fidelity in children’s mental health
  • What questions a well-informed advocate should ask about mental health services, including how to articulate a clear referral question
