Medical Aspects of Child Abuse and Neglect

Target Audience

This training is offered for professionals who work in the child welfare system or collaborate on child welfare investigations, including medical providers, nurses, child welfare professionals, law enforcement, attorneys, mental health professionals, and educators and school personnel.


This training course describes the medical indicators of child physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect and dispels commonly believed myths and inferences. This training is delivered by Project Harmony Medical Director Suzanne Haney, MD, FAAP. Dr. Haney is board-certified in child abuse and is the only doctor with these credentials in a five state region. Please note that photos used in this presentation may be graphic but are used to increase awareness.

Participants will learn:

  • Strategies on how to approach and care for children with medical conditions
  • How to collaborate with medical professionals to ensure that appropriate care is provided for children in the child welfare system.   
  • To develop an appreciation for the role of medical professionals in child welfare.
