Ethical Mental Health Practice with Children and Families


This ethics training is designed for the mental health practitioner who treats children and families. It offers a review of current best practices and standards, and demonstrates a framework for examining and resolving ethical challenges and dilemmas. Issues of treatment consent, confidentiality, responsible transfer and termination of treatment, reporting of child maltreatment, and how to resolve issues unique to child and family therapy will be reviewed. 

Participants will learn:

  • Current confidentiality and consent standards
  • When and how to report child maltreatment
  • How to recognize issues that arise during treatment such as dual relationships, boundaries, working with multiple family members, and responsible transfer or termination
  • How to apply a problem solving framework to ethical conflicts in practice
