Child advocacy centers were designed to respond to disturbing research indicating that children are re-traumatized when we expect them to recount their story of abuse again and again.
In the past, children had to repeat their stories to many concerned professionals; teachers, counselors, principals, detectives, medical staff, Child Protective Service workers, attorneys and therapists. At child advocacy centers, children tell their story one time to an interviewer trained in child development and the results of that interview can be shared with all parties involved in the case. In addition, many child advocacy centers offer physical and mental health services to children and support to parents.
Project Harmony is an accredited member of the National Children’s Alliance. We are one of eight child advocacy centers that make up the Nebraska Alliance of Child Advocacy Centers and one of close to 700 in the United States.
Project Harmony is unique in that it is one of a handful of centers that actually co-locates with our partner agencies, thus providing a more integrated response to child abuse and neglect.
